Thinking about getting a new dog or cat?
WOW, this is a super important step for you and your family to take time out and decide. After losing my mom and my previous dog six months after her passing, I felt a significant void without a canine companion. Despite my husband's reservations about the pain of loss and the responsibilities of having a dog, when I saw Sasha's picture, I instantly fell in love with her, knowing that the time was right to re-enter the dog world. But before you rush to get your next pet, itâs important to take a second, slow down, and really assess if this is the best time for you and your family. Pets are a lifetime commitment, and even though you canât predict the future, itâs important that you make sure you can always care for them well.
What You Need to Take Into Account Before Getting a New Pet
Time
Having a pet requires a significant amount of time and effort. I dedicate time every day to train my furry companion, Sasha and maintain her fitness and mental wellbeing. We engage in various activities throughout the day to ensure she remains healthy and mentally stimulated. Our day usually ends with some relaxing playtime and cuddles. And thatâs not considering the amount of time it will take to get your new pet acclimated to your home!
â A new pet will need time to learn the new environmentâ Bringing home a puppy is like bringing home a baby. You will need to puppy-proof your home.
â A new pet will need time to adjust to a routineâ Training your puppy to potty properly takes time and effort, and it is entirely up to you to get it right.
â A new pet will need time to get to know each family member and become comfortable with other pets or children. (Make sure to contact us for a fun game for kids and dogs.)
â Youâll need the time you need to grieve the loss of a pet before getting a new oneâ Just like my story above, when I lost Shadow, I needed some downtime and for her memory to bring me joy, not sadness.
Money
Buying a dog costs money, whether youâre adopting or not. Youâll also need to invest in some basic equipment and necessities. For example, a new dog will need a crate, Puppy Training, leash, collar, bed, water bowl, food bowl, toys, chews, gates, and more I did not mention.
Youâll also need to budget monthly for their caretaking. Food, toys, groomers, vetsâŚthey all cost money.
If you donât have extra money to spare at the end of the month, can you really afford another pet?
Patience
Even the best behaved, cuddly furball will require some extra TLC and patience from their new human! Kittens and puppies generally have more energy than adult cats and dogs, so youâll need to consider your petâs age and energy levels before committing to them.
If youâre new on a job, about to move, or going through any other major life event that increases your stress levels, you might not have the patience to train or bond with a new pet. And thatâs okay!
Space
Is there extra living space inside and outside your home? Different species and breeds need different amounts of space, and younger pets often need more room to play than the sleepier, cuddlier older pets.
Before choosing a new pet consider, where will they hang out, and whether there is an area for them to play, a place for them to learn potty training and a nice place to watch the world go by. Itâs a good idea to research which types of pets might do best with what you have available.
Commitment
When you choose to take on a new pet, your life will never be the same again! This can be an amazing thing, but it can also be stressful at times. Consider your level of commitment to what it will take to keep your pet happy and healthy - and the lifestyle changes youâd like to make and those youâd rather not.
For frequent travelers who love exploring remote vacation locations, choosing a smaller breed that can easily accompany you on your trips might be a better fit. Alternatively, finding a reliable boarding facility or a trusted pet sitter while you're away can provide peace of mind and proper care for your pet.
If you are someone who enjoys staying out late at night or has a busy evening schedule, you might need to consider hiring an evening dog walker or pet sitter to ensure your furry friend gets the attention and exercise they need even when you're not available.
Having a furry friend by your side is an absolute blast and brings so much joy into your life! The constant companionship from your adorable dog or cat is like having a hilarious and loving sidekick that keeps you smiling all day long. As a dog trainer who absolutely adores my own pup, I can't get enough of the playful antics and the heartwarming snuggles we share. Plus, being a responsible pet parent feels like an exciting adventure where we explore new tricks, and fun activities and embrace the sheer excitement of wagging tails and happy barks! The extra exercise and outdoor escapades we embark on together keep both of us in tip-top shape, and the best part is that every day feels like a new, playful journey full of tail-wagging goodness. Having a dog or cat as your furry bestie is simply paws-itively amazing! đžđ
